favicon keeps on vanishing

Dear all,

I have a webpage which is supposed to display a favicon in the location bar of the browser. Using

<link rel=”icon” href=”images/logo.ico” type=”image/ico”>
<link rel=”shortcut icon” href=”images/logo.ico” type=”image/ico”>

the icon is actually displayed.

However, when switching to a different tab in the browser or when reloading part of the webpage the icon sometimes vanishs. I did not find out clearly why and when this is happening but I suspect that this prob. could be related to the fact that my page contains frames (old-fashioned – hehe). I include the above links to the shortcut icon in each individual HTML file as well but to no avail.

I guess it’s best if you have a closer look for yourself. The URL to my page is: www.moeglich.net

thanks in advance,
AM

@sciguyryanSep 21.2004 — There is only one reason for this and unfortunatly there is nothing you can do about it.

When you view a web page the files are stored in cache (In Temporary Internet Files), this includes the favourite icon. Once the Temporary Internet Files are deleted then use will have to re-visit the page to aquire the icon again.

@FangSep 21.2004 — Still buggy in browsers. Read through these links for some pointers.

One of your framed pages did not contain a Favicon <link>

@jdaviaSep 22.2004 — In Frames there is one page that does not show on the internet, that is your frameset page. It governs all other pages, especially if the menu is one of the frames. That page will show always, so that is where the favicon should be.

Try adding the link to the favicon there. but include it in all other pages too.

@AngulionauthorSep 22.2004 — Salut,

first of all thanks to all of you for thinking about and answering to my problem. Coming to your suggestions:

@jdavia:

As I already put appropriate links to the favicon in all HTML files including the top frame page which actually is not shown, it is clear that this has not caused the probs.

@Fang and sciguyryan:

I already suspected some kind of buggy or non-standard browser behaviour before as well. However, what still puzzles me is that apparently all other pages with favicons manage to display them all right in the browser on my computer. It seems to be only my own page which for some reason fails doing so. In my first post I gave you the URL to my page enabling you to go there and maybe reproduce that problem. I would be very glad if you came up with a solution to this problem which I have been dealing with for quite some time now.

Thanks for your answers again,

yours,

Angulion

@FangSep 22.2004 — As mentioed the deu/welcome.html does not have a Favicon <link>

The Favicon does work in IE, half works in Mozilla and Opera, but not at all in Firefox.

The favicon from http://www.favicon.com/ always seems to work. It is worth looking at how they do it, particularly color palette and size of image.

@jdaviaSep 23.2004 — This is what I use for mine

<link REL="SHORTCUT ICON" href="http://www.citlink.net/~jdavia/favicon.ico">

My favicon is named favicon.

I placed it in the root Directory of my website where the first page is, and gave it my server's address.

Click this

http://www.citlink.net/~jdavia/favicon.ico

Try that and see if it helps.

@FangSep 23.2004 — It's not working too well.

The favicons I make are 32x32 using windows palette with this link:

<link rel="Favicon Icon" href="favicon.ico">

This works in IE, Mozilla and Firefox.

For Opera the ico should be 16x16

Remember to empty the cashe and remove any shortcuts before trying a new ico image.

That is not correct. I am using FF 0.9 and have full support.

I believe the best way to use a favicon is to name the image "favicon" then whatever extension and to be sure it is in the same directory as the page. I could be wrong about this, but the link provided should give you this information. ?

@FangSep 23.2004 — PhillMc read my previous post.

The ico and method used by http://www.favicon.com/ always works. See how they do it:

<LINK REL="SHORTCUT ICON" HREF="favicon.ico"> with 16x16 ico windows palette

@PhillMcSep 23.2004 — My apologies as I did not see that post. ?

@FangSep 23.2004 — No problem ?

@AngulionauthorSep 24.2004 — Hi all,

after experimenting a little bit I put the icon in the top level directory and named it 'favicon.ico'. Finally, this also works in Firefox.

Being proud of having worked this out I came back to this newsgroup to tell you all about it only to find out that this solution was already suggested by some of you ?

Sorry, Fang, I did not read your latter posts as I did not receive any emails notifying me of them (and apart from doing my homepage, alas I also have to work from time to time). Btw, did you see to which use I put the hint you recently gave me on scrolling a DIV using Javascript?

bye and have a nice weekend,

AM
