Ultimate Tool for PHP developers

Hey all, I was just searching Google for instructions on setting up Apache, MySQL, PHP, and PMA on Windows, and stumbled upon WAMP. It’s a pre-configured server setup, that includes Apache, MySQL, PHP, and phpMyAdmin. The install was really easy. I highly recommend it if you want to test on your own machine.

XAMPP is also a good tool, but I prefer WAMP simply because it doesn’t require you to have a prompt window open while running your server.

Just thought I’d let everyone know ?

Dan

lol, me too. ? It was pretty confusing and a pain the first few times around, but I think I've got the hang of it now.

Speaking of all this, what's involved in upgrading to PHP5? The last one was just a zip file... so do I just remove the folder and the corresponding files I copied to other folders for the install, and then install PHP5, or...?

...me too

?

Even so, this link is well appreciated. I've a couple of friends who like these things done for them. They haven't been overly impressed with XAMPP for the same reasons mentioned by DanielT.

WAMP sounds like a godsend.

Thanks

@Daniel_TauthorSep 21.2004 — LOL, I tried the configuring way about 100 times, and whenever I got PHP installed, Apache wouldn't be able to start. Then I tried Abyss, but for some odd reason, I couldn't get MySQL working with Abyss, and Abyss doesn't have mod_rewrite.

I shall never configure again :p

@ShrineDesignsSep 21.2004 — configuring php and apache is really easy, all the nesseccary steps to configure them are all explained

php5 on windows is a little different than in prior versions, mysql isn't automatically loaded, you have to copy mysql.dll and/or mysqli.dll to %SYSTEM% dir

@JonaSep 21.2004 — I, as most others, prefer to configure it manually. I did, though, notice probably the most hilarious banner advertisement I've ever seen!

I have MySQL already installed on my computer, with all the relevant files in place, so I assume it’s mainly switching out the old PHP folder for the new one, yes?

@JonaSep 21.2004 — No Paul, you have to take the DLLs that are relevant to the appropriate extension and place copies of them in the C:WINDOWSSYSTEM32 (for XP) directory. It's usually C:WINDOWSSYSTEM for non-NT users.

I’m a tad confused; all the DLLs are already copied to the system directory from my previous install of PHP.

@Daniel_TauthorSep 21.2004 — You need to move php5ts.dll to C:/windows/system, and move php5apache(2).dll to the same folder that php4apache.dll is in right now. Then, edit the lines you added to httpd.conf upon installation, changine all the 4's to 5's ?

@Paul_JrSep 21.2004 — Cheers! One problem, though: I don’t remember where I put php4apache.dll…

I’ll have to read my book again to find out where I put everything. ?
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@Daniel_TauthorSep 22.2004 — php4apache will likely be in C:/windows/system/ or else c:/<path to apache directory>/SAPI/
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@ShrineDesignsSep 22.2004 — php[X]apache.dll can be left where it is you just set the correct path in your httpd.conf fileLoadModule php[X]_module c:/php/php[X]apache.dll
AddModule mod_php[X].c

Success!
