National Oracle Conferance (Heaven)

A few days ago I got sponsored to attend the National Oracle Conferance. I get free food for two whole days, a free Oracle and Java shirt, and a 12 subscription to the Oracle mag! Im pretty stoked because it normally costs about $400 per person but I get to go for next to nothing. Only Oracle User Group members are aloud to attend the conferance, so i had to pay my registration, but thats about it.

It goes for two days, starting tomorrow. I will post some details of how it went tomorrow night. (this will allow me to disguise my blatent bragging)

Has anyone ever been to any of these national conferances before?

Regards,
Andrew Buntine.

@ray326Sep 20.2004 — I haven't been to an Oracle conference like that but this summer I went to the IBM/Rational users group conference and it was excellent. Oracle should do a good job, too. Great netorking opportunities and lots of good food and booze. Enjoy!

@buntineauthorSep 21.2004 — Ok, I got home about 30 minutes ago.

Overall, the day was really good. I went to a bunch of Java conferances, which were mainly geared towards J2EE/Oracle integration.

The food was great and I spoke to some big players in the industry, such as DBA's and CIO's.

There was alot of blatant advertising. For example, roughtly every five or so minutes the lecturers would say "you really need to be on an Oracle back-end to do this" (or something similar).

Dell, Intel, Sun Microsystems, and Quest Software were also platinum partners of the event, so I got a bunch of free promotional merchandise, in the form of pens, bags, etc.

The show continues tomorrow and I am definetely looking forward to it.

Regards.

@Khalid_AliSep 21.2004 — Sometimes one may get some new things in these seminars..etc,sometimes one may get introduced with new products,however my top priority in these ocasions is "free food" and lots of it..? ?

@buntineauthorSep 22.2004 — Sounds really interesting!!! I Hope you die young.

Anyway, the second day of the conferance was ever better. Tom Daly from Sun gave me the low-down on Java5, which is dubbed "Tiger". One of the best advancements is the print formatting method that has been included. Anyone who has developed in C will be very happy about this! We all dearly miss printf.
<i>
</i>// Example of the new Java printf.
int val = 8;
String str = "Brutal";
System.out.printf("Int: %d. Str: %s", val, str);

There is also a bunch of other cool features, such as an advanced For-Loop, similar to the For-Each loop in VB and PL/SQL technologies.

A bunch of Americans came out and gave some excellent conferances on Project Management and Disaster Recovery Routines.

Regards.

I'm not sure just how safely we can say that given the ramifications of variable args. ?

@PeOfEoSep 22.2004 — Do they ever give out free software at the conventions? I went to a political convention, got some free food, watched some debates and got some cool bumper stickers... but thats about it. They did not give out software at the political convention :rolleyes:

@buntineauthorSep 23.2004 — Dell, Oracle, and Quest Software were giving out free software like the latest version of TOAD. A bunch of trail software was available, too.

Actually, I think you can sign up online to get a free copy of Oracle 10g... I think I signed up, though I haven't gotten it yet. I did get a copy of 9i (or maybe it was an older version, it was a while back) in a similar fashion.

EDIT: You can download it: http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/database/oracle10g/index.html
