Which Hoster Would you Pick & Others

I would like a few opinions on a good hosting company that supports phpBB2 and provides good service. I have been looking seriously at the two mentioned below and would like to hear your feelings or other I should be considering.

If you are familiar with both of these hosters, who would you chose?

Regards,
Tom

@squallflightSep 05.2004 — I highly recommend myqth. (myqth.com if u're from US myqth.co.uk if u're from UK)

their cheap and the service is great. I renewed my site with them in July cause their so good! I use myqth.co.uk

I'd also recommend the annual pay (way cheaper!) $48 p/a (.com) £29 p/a (.co.uk)

@RedLooneySep 06.2004 — I really like http://www.dr2.net , but they are not accepting new clients right now.

@shimonSep 06.2004 — I've got a lot of stuff on cheapo shared-hosting accounts with Phpwebhosting, including some 'real' clients, and they've always been good value for money, with good support etc, and they're usually happy to install extensions that you need.

They only have the one plan though - if you want dedicated hosting you'll need to look elsewhere (we always used to use Rackspace).

Right now I'm looking for a host with PHP5 ?

@squallflightSep 06.2004 — I hear PHP 5 has changed to be more object oriented and more like Java

[off topic]

I also read an article here about PHP and the Zend engine possibly being own by Sun meaning no more free/Open source PHP??? bummer ?

@shimonSep 06.2004 — [also off topic, sorry]

PHP5 has - among many other things - considerably improved Object support. So you could equally argue that PHP5 is more like Python, C++, Smalltalk or hell, even Microsoft's C#. Java didn't invent OOP, it just implements it reasonably well.

I've read that article and it's a piece of junk. Of course Sun are interested in what PHP can do for them - who isn't? - but PHP's licensing combined with its development model means that it can not, and will not ever be controlled by a commercial organisation such as Sun.

If you want to hypothesise, I think it's far more interesting to consider that it's more likely that in the future, PHP, Perl and Python will be unified on the same underlying engine ('Parrot'). Rasmus talks about it here:

Anyone up for a "Pint"? ?

@squallflightSep 06.2004 — well the future certainly looks interesting. thx for clearing that up. No one can truly say "I own PHP" even the original has little say, its too vast a project.

All we coders can do is wait for the future to come. Truthfully as long as it stays easy to use and learn I dn't mind (but I will if I had to pay)?

Success!
