netscape compliance

I have created a site using a javascript builder to create a menubar and scrolling newsreel. All the files and code seems fine and it works perfectly in IE6. However, in Netscape 7.1 or otherwise the javascript objects are not visible. I assume the different object model of netscape is too blame but i don’t have the knowledge to put this right. Strangely, if i delete this opening line: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd“>

one of the javascript objects appears! How can i get around this problem??

any advice welcome!

@BillyRayAug 24.2004 — How about posting some code? It would be very hard to help you out without it.

Personally, I'd leave the DTD in, get your code working in NN, and it will most likely work in IE anyway.

@stewauthorAug 24.2004 — here is the page 'default'.htm, also the jsp file used for the menubar. It all sits relatively in //C:/JSHS file.

The javascript lines in 'Default' define the menuitems on the menubar.

thanks

@BillyRayAug 24.2004 — You haven't posted the file awjsmenugold10.js.

Incidentally, one of your meta tags has a spelling mistake of the word "school".

@BillyRayAug 24.2004 — Don't take this the wrong way, but I don't really think I can help you on this one... The menu code you've given is very much obfuscated, and I will not spend my time trying to un-obfuscate it just to help someone out.

I suggest you contact the creator of the menu code and ask for a cross-browser (or un-obfuscated) version.

Hope this helps,

Dan

@VladdyAug 24.2004 — Better yet, send that script to "Recycle Bin" - making your navigation JS dependent is about the worst thing you can do to your site.

@stewauthorAug 24.2004 — I see your point people but my priority was a menu driven navigation created in quick time, obtuse code created as a result was not a concern of mine. The fact that there appears to be a worrying non-compliance issue is the problem. I can't use an applet because people might not have the runtime thing installed and being a web designer by hobby and not profession means i don't know enough about alternatives or have the time or knowledge to care whether the site is java-dependant or not.

thanks anyway

@JPnycAug 24.2004 — Sorry, I'd like to try to help, but that code is a nightmare to read.

@JPnycAug 24.2004 — All I can tell you is, if you see any "document.all" statements anywhere, they would be 1 potential problem. There could be plenty others but that's the most common.

@stewauthorAug 24.2004 — So do script building applications produce bad script, inaccurate script, or have netscape just produced an object model in a dead awkward way?

Yes. I have never heard any programmer say anything else in answer to that question. Yes, they produce almost unreadable, unworkable code. And that's the problem. The way they spit it out, it's such an arduous task to trouble shoot, that no one wants to do it.

I've never seen JS builder which you said you used for this, but how old is the version you have? That might give us a clue what syntax errors it may have produced.
