A better ranking in Google?

Hi,
I tried to submit my new site to www.dmoz.com , but seems to be impossible, eventhough I followed the instructions.
I am a webmaster (of sorts), but I am also a novice in some aspects, like how to be found in search engines like Google. I submitted the site to Google – and 3 weeks later I can’t find my site anywhere via Google, but I also read that it should first be submitted to DMOZ.
In short, any hints you can give me (which a novice can understand..) to help me get a better position in Google? My site is www.loversofbeauty.com
Thank you so much.

@CyCoJul 28.2004 — ...I found this

@joleneauthorJul 28.2004 — Thanks for the reply. But when I tried typing the words "Lovers of Beauty" seperated I found nothing in Google. Because I assume people would actually type the words together "loversofbeauty" What do you think? Do you think most people use quote marks when searching in Google?

@CyCoJul 28.2004 — ...I really don't know.

Maybe removing all of the "non breaking spaces" out of your H1 heading would help??

@joleneauthorJul 28.2004 — I tried that idea of taking out all the spacing tags from the title; I still get the same results in Google. ie. I can't locate the site by typing "Lovers of Beauty" Thank you.

@CyCoJul 29.2004 — I found it on this page, about half the way down...

@olafAug 05.2004 — Hallo,

sometimes the google-ranking is hard to understand. Example: there are pages with everything in the code what a search engine don't likes but these pages are higher ranked then optimized pages.

I your case:

The amount of "non content" code is very big. Place your style-sheet and javascript into external files.

@chrisranjanaAug 05.2004 — dmoz listing sure helps in google ranking though !

@olafAug 05.2004 — yes you're right but it takes so long...

by the way, how frequent do you should describe to categories of DMOZ?

It takes up to a year or more to get into DMOZ. Only submit once or you submission will go to the bottom of the queque.

The only way to get into the Google Directory is through DMOZ but you can get into Google search engine within a few days. However it will only rank your site via your domain name for several months because of what is being called Google's Sandbox--they deny it but that is what most everyone is experiencing.

Google ranks sites by backlinks first and then by Keywords whereas Yahoo and MSN rank sites by density of keywords. Therefore, if you want to get a good rank for your major keywords in Google you need to get lots of quality backlinks coming into your site first (PR 4 or better) and the more the better--get at least 10 (not just submissions but links actually working) and then your rank for major keywords should start climbing.

@tda_digitalAug 07.2004 — Your already listed on Google and probably yahoo, but the problem is no one is going to find you using the search words you have used I your Meta tags. Your going to have to do some revising of all three of the following items in your Meta tags:

1). Title

2). Description

3). Page content

Please go to the following URL to see exactly what I mean:

http://www.submitexpress.com/analyzer/

Should you elect to do the aforementioned revising and using the above listed URL to get a figure of merit, then resubmit your web site to the major portals.

If you would like to discuss this more I can be reached Skype, User Name: tda-digital or Yahoo Messenger, User name: tda_digital .

@fullestopAug 17.2004 — Hi

submission and listing and ranking on engines are totally 3 seperate issues.

submission doesnt mean that engines would list the site( dmoz.org is the toughest to crack) and listing doesnt mean that you would be placed on top of the pages.

it needs work..lots of dimentions are involved

cheers

@olafAug 17.2004 — Rahoul,

i think the definition of therms is not the problem here...

@fullestopAug 17.2004 — my point was that just submission is not enough..

lots of other factors are necessary for placements.

some of them being..link backs, on page factors like keyword density,

metas, internal links, use of Header tags etc etc..

cheers mate
