Does SEO work?! what about Adwords?

I’ve got a web shop/site that’s been live now for about 3-4 months. It’s been Search Engine Optimised by someone else (aparently!) but still no orders (or even hits for that matter). I was wondering if anyone here has used Google Adwords and whether they’ve had any sort of success with it.

@ramon_marettauthorJul 22.2004 — Do you not think it was more of a business related question? I'm not really asking about seo I'm asking about adwords. Whether anyone thinks they make good business sense? Sorry for the confusion but i do think it's more appropiate here.
