In that respect, a “final answer” will depend on what you want your CV to say: that you ran an online business, or that you have skills as a web developer — or something in between?

If I want to be employable as a web developer, will it be wise for me to spend my time getting a free online certificate from freecodecamp.org or from Coursera? Will the web development industry (my future employers) accept it? Or will I need to have a formal qualification from a training provider? Like a university, an online institute, etc.
thank you very much for your time!

@Steve_R_JonesmoderatorJan 22.2022 — Your ability to build websites and all things related is the Number ONE thing employers are looking for. How you got there is less important.

@ZorgJan 22.2022 — If your just starting off, your skills and experience is what employers look for.

Sure you can go and get educated by taking an online coding camp course or get formal education from a university. This will make getting in the door easier, but what really matters is your experience. If you have no training but you can produce great projects on time, then we would hire you before any other person.

Some inexperienced people go thru the online camps & certification courses, get a taste of what life of a programmer will be. They end up quitting their first job or programming altogether, because they find that the actual work is not what they thought it would be. Or they turn down the job because they have some unrealistic expectation of what their salary should be. Usually what they are sold on, by these online camps. Only to be disappointed because they lack the experience to be at that level.

**Being a Web Developer:**
  • - Its also about how you handle pressure and stress

  • - Having problem solving and critical thinking skills

  • - How well you do working with a team

  • - How do you handle criticism and direction

  • - Keeping self motivated and organized

  • - Keeping your skills up-to-date

  • - Your always growing & learning

  • - Do you know where to go to find answers or do we have to babysit and hold your hand all the time

  • Employers do look at your training, but if you have the experience, this would make up for any lack in qualifications.
