Im creating a webpage control panel of sorts. Im created my own little program icons similar to those on my desktop.
Here’s my dilemma: I want to link those icons to local program files on my computer, so that when I click them, the program opens, just like what happens when clicking an icon on my desktop.
Obviously this would only work on my computer at home, unless by some miracle the hard drive was exactly the same on another computer I access the webpage from.
Anyway, Im creating the link as “file:///c:/program files/program folder/program.exe”
It SORTA works in Internet Explorer, as it pops up a box asking me if I want to open the program or save it to disk. If I choose open, then the program opens like I prefer. (However I’d rather it just open by itself, without asking.)
The problem is I use Mozilla, or Netscape. When I view the webpage from my local system, it only allows me to “Download” the file the link points to. The option for opening the file is greyed out. If I view the page from my server absolutely NOTHING happens when I click the icon.
Now, I could use IE for this, since it works. But I also use this control panel to browse the internet, which I refuse to do with IE, because of the security issues. That and Mozilla is just plain superior.
And I fear, that the only reason my control panel works in IE is because of the lack of security IE offers, as opening an exe file is generally a no no, when it comes to good security.
But this doesnt threaten me for obvious reasons…
Is there any way to create my links or change settings in my browser to allow the programs to open? I dont mind loading the web page from my local system. Thats not a problem as long as the programs open.
