Can Githib replace FTP file transfers?

Hello. I am new to Github. In web development, is there a way to avoid using FTP file transfers for updating a website and kind of edit the files of the website by editing html code located on Github instead? (in a way that the webhosting provider would allow to edit the files located there through the ones saved on Github?) Thank you.

@NogDogJul 12.2021 — You can edit files directly on GitHub (the pencil-shaped "edit" button when viewing a file), but you'd still have to update the web server where it's actually being served -- unless you're talking about a site running on [GitHub Pages](https://pages.github.com/)?
