mag navigation

Hi.

I’m trying to create a scholastic magazine. You can temporarily see what I’m trying to do by going to www.lexiglobal.net.

I’m having a problem with the present design’s inflexibility, and am not sure whether to fix the problem with A) ssi, ? cgi, or C) javascript.

The problem is simple: creating an easily customizable code, so that I can edit details quickly and effectively. (instead of editing page by page by page… (if I had twenty five page magazines, it could take me hours on end!)

If I use javascript, I can customize the header/navigator through my VBulletin Board, and then place content in an iframe.

In trying this, I came across two specific problems, however.

If I’m on page three, I need the right arrow button to link to page four, and if I’m on page four, I need the right arrow button to link to page five.

I don’t know javascript, but I’m wondering if the following arguement is possible or is the best solution:

If iframe name=mag is 1.html, then link frame to 2.html.
If iframe name=mag is 2.html, then link frame to 3.html
If iframe name=mag is 3.html, then link frame to 1.html

Then, I have another problem: select boxes don’t link to iframes like normal links. If anyone can offer the code to fix that, I would greatly appreciate it.

Anyway, maybe I’m better off hiring my friend who knows cgi? ? Any help/advice is appreciated!

@CharlesJul 11.2004 — You don't want to use JavaScript for this, or any other navigation. You'll simply cut out all of us who do not use JavaScript. And frames annoy a good number of good people. Use SSI if you have it available. If it works at all, then it works for everybody.

@LogicusauthorJul 11.2004 — Okay, thx! That's what I needed to know! As for the frame, I understand and share your apprehension, but I like the versatility of iframes and think that it is the only available tool to efficiently integrate a magazine into a vBulletin using the portal system that I am.

One general question, though. Is it safe to assume that an absolute majority of people without javascript are either lower end users or have slower connections? Do you have javascript turned off for some other reason?

@CharlesJul 11.2004 — I disable JavaScript because I can't stand the sorts of things certain web authors try to inflict upon me: mouse trails, pop-up windows, re-sizing my window. Some people cannot use JavaScript, or at least some JavaScript features, because of some disability. Some people disable all scripting in MSIE in fear of getting some virus.

A minimally competent web author will make a page that works well on all browsers. And that includes Braille and audio browsers. Just follow the HTML 4.01 Specification (http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/) and the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0 (http://www.w3.org/TR/WCAG10/).

@LogicusauthorJul 12.2004 — oh, thanks, that's really cool. I've been to the Accessify forum and was aware of some of the audio technology available, but I didn't realize the W3 offered specific guidlines or that there was, as I had wondered, a braile system. I'll keep those links handy for stage two in development. Although I'm working with a strong cultural diversity theme, I hope I can have a community that is also diverse in regard to mental and physical conditions.

I expected you would say something like that regarding javascript ? ! I can understand where you're coming from, having similar experiences ? !
