Easiest way to Ajax-ify a table of data?

I am primarily a server-side developer.
I want to make a client-side html table of data editable with Ajax concepts.
what is the quickest and easiest way to do this? I think using Angular would have a big learning curve and may be overkill for what I want to accomplish.
Years ago I would use jQuery, but I get the impression that it’s the old school way of doing it.
what ““modern” JavaScript ((or similar tools) can I use to quickly and easily do this ?
