Why are notification counters not updated on other tabs?

Is there a reason that basically all (I don’t know any that don’t) websites which have a button for the notifications and a number representing the unread notifications do not update the number when the notifications are read on another tab. (Only if you reload the page or navigate to a new one – which on many modern websites don’t work as well because it is not really opening a new site just all js and history push. idk)

Isn’t there a efficient way to check for the new notification number every few seconds? (Like when it is on the same browser you don’t even need Internet traffic. Just localStorage for example. Or doesn’t that work?

It is very annoying to think you have a new notification only to realize it is just not updated yet
