How to make top navbar thinner

When I open a page, my top navbar is very thick and covers part of my h1 element but when I scroll down the thickness reduces and uncovers it. How do I change the behavior so that the page opens with the navbar thickness reduced?

Thanks for the reply. I fixed it by adjusting the max_height in the bootstrap.css file.
