What do I need to know as a web developer?

I have been away for 5 years and I’m not up to date on current standards and various advances in different tech. I am looking for info that will help me orient myself and play some catch up. Anyone got any advice?

Thanks,

Bice

@VITSUSAJan 15.2020 — As a web developer, you should know about the latest trends, knowledge of the latest software, and online tools.

@HelenMJan 15.2020 — @certifiedbice#1613186 You should know the basics of HTML, CSS, and Javascript. Then the knowledge of different frameworks will be so useful for you, as they are designed to make web development more pleasant. Pick one of them and learn it really well. Also, to know about different DevTools will be useful, as it makes your work easier and faster.

@NogDogJan 15.2020 — Front end: responsive, mobile-friendly design; along with "single-page app" implementations.

Back end: Python is on the rise, especially for data-intensive apps. NodeJS is the other rising trend in server-side languages.

@certifiedbiceauthorJan 17.2020 — So I have 20+ years as a developer, using html, JavaScript,css,php etc.

I guess I wasn't clear enough about what I was looking for.

I haven't been active for 5 years in the field and I have missed a lot. I want to catch up, I need to know about what developers are using these days for various projects. Current standards, popular technology being utilized by companies, that sort of thing...

If that isn't clear enough then maybe I need someone to help me figure out what I need to say 🤪

Once again, my thanks.

Bice

I especially advise you to refer to news and blogs on the internet. That way you will be updated quickly.

@hotserveJan 18.2020 — @certifiedbice#1613259 Such a bad situation... I am having the same need with you here as well. It feels so bitter to be good at something and to feel lost after a "small" brake... I wish you get back on the rails real soon my friend. I will try that too starting from scratch. Installing a cms and some extensions for a start! And then is the sofware. I guess my inventory is outdated but i will try to find the latest versions. Any clue anybody where should we search? E.g for dreamweaver and fireworks?

@SwagaaoftJan 18.2020 — As a web developer you should know and master front end development.

Moreover you should also master data structure and algorithm which I think is mandatory for every software developer. You may write your own server one day.

@friendlydevJan 26.2020 — The best way to get back on track is simply being up to date with any software development blogs. You should try, for example, reading posts from actual software development company, like this one https://idego-group.com/

@DarthSidiousMay 15.2020 — It may sound strange, but you need to know how making a proper resume for your future employer. I worked as a part time freelancer for 3 years because I didn't know how to write a CV that will be good enough. All the resumes I sent to the companies wasn't answered back. Then I asked one of my friends for advice and he helped me. He showed me where to find [software engineer back sample template](https://resume.it/prof/backend) and I used it. After that I got a job. I have worked at this job for 2 years since then and they pay me well. I earn more money than I earned when I was a freelancer.
