I was wondering if anybody could tell me im away to start learning a server side language im trying to debate between PHP and ASP.net but i was wondering if you create a script say a CMS is it easy to modify to use on other sites know like when you use css and you code a menu and you begin developing another site with the same style of menu you just take the code and alter to the sites needs, is this possible with these scripts as from what i hear it takes lots of time to create CMS’s/forum/shopping baskets i dont want to have to keep coding them all the time but just want to alter them.

Sorry for the long winded post hope you guys get my drift.

@MstrBobJul 02.2004 — Ach, I can sense an argument about to ensue. Well, I will tell you to learn PHP (especially with PHP 5 almost done), but if PeOfEo shows up, he'll tell you ASP.net. Anywho, yes, CMS, forums, shopping carts, ect take a long time to code. But once they are made, they are quite easy to reuse with just minimal modifications. That's one of the great things about server side languages - the visitor's browser is minimal, it's only the server that matters. But PHP is quite easy, apparently it's similar to C or something, though I don't know. But ASP.net apparently gives you a choice of different programming languages to choose from. My advice -> choose PHP :p

@AdamGundryJul 02.2004 — You're right, I think this could lead to an argument (it usually does). I'm not going to go into the technical advantages of each one - both are quite capable of handling most of your requirements. What I will say is the reason PHP is by far the best choice: it is Free. Not just free as in gratis, but free as in free speech.

There's an interesting comparison (from the folks at PHP, obviously) here: http://www.php.net/manual/en/faq.languages.php

@pyroJul 02.2004 — Threads like this always go downhill quickly, so I'll just put in my plug for PHP and move along...

@johndoe190authorJul 02.2004 — Cheers guys yeah it wasnt really a question of which server side language i am going to use but if the scripts could be easily modified to suit different sites and Mstrbob answered it.

Thanks again.

@iamlucky13Jul 02.2004 — Since PHP and ASP are interpreted languages that don't need compiling, it's easy as long as you do a little planning and stay organized. Comment any function so you know what it does a year after you write the code and any variable if the name doesn't immediately tell you why it's there.

@johndoe190authorJul 04.2004 — Cool ill do that but first ill have to get some time to set a testing server up.

ASP.NET is compiled on first request. Unlike classic ASP, ASP.NET is an entire language, not just a set of API's and Objects. Furthermore, Its fully Object Oriented. ?

The core syntax of PHP has been inherited from C. Though, the language itself is quite defferent.

Unline php asp.net has flexibility too, asp.net its self is not a language that you code with, but you can code asp.net using vb.net, c#, j#, c++.net, and more, delphi even, but it is all object oriented, like buntine said. The fact that asp.net is compliled makes it more like jsp then like php or asp classic though, it also allows asp.net to perform better. But when asp.net has not been compiled, the first request, php could out perform it, but when asp.net is compiled its performance is outstanding. I have been working on a cms forever, the only reason it has been taking me so long to make one with asp.net is because I never work on it, I suffer from a terminal lack of motivation, if I pick this thing up again I will breeze through it, its sitting here about half way done, I just need to put the peices together.

Lol... Yeah right. At least PHP has platform portability.

Just wait. Microsoft will use their patents to pull the rug out from under the Mono guys as soon as it starts to hurt them. The first time some big commercial software outfit takes a popular HR or ERP suite they've built for .NET and rehost it on Mono, the MS lawyers will be on Mono like a cheap suit.

thats why I plan to get my copy soon. ?. But for the time being I have a good argument that asp.net will go cross platform lol. Ms might leave mono alone because they have been hinting for a while that they have been wanting to go cross platform with .net, the might just gobble up mono and then try to sell it too of course.

Success!
