Need Help with Forum Script Questions

Is it possible to host a forum on a domain where I don’t have database access? What are my options other than remote hosting? What scripts are available and where can I get a free one? Where can I read up more about how a non database forum script would operate?

PS-(I would prefer not to remote host since I’d like to cash in on the return traffic.)

Thanks in advance for your kind assistance.

@DaiWelshJun 30.2004 — You can use a forum script that uses text files to store the info rather than a database, these are quite common, I think YaBB (http://www.yabbforum.com/) is one, but you should be able to find plenty more at hotscripts, download.com or just by googling.

A more radical alternative is that you might be able to host just the database elsewhere, e.g. http://www.freesql.org/ but have all the scripts running on your host. Performance is likely to be worse since the calls to the database pass over the net, but beggars can't be choosers ?

Edit: forgot, www.freesql.org explicitly excludes forums (for reasons of load I think) but you may be able to find another free host for the db part.
