I’m completely new to HTML, I need Help!

Hi there, I’ve never used HTML before today.
I’m currently setting up a geocities web page, and the Yahoo Help page is useless [well I’ve found it so anyway], I have uploaded a winrar ZIP-ed file onto the file manager page, but I am unable to creat/write a link from the ZIP file, to the web page using the page editor URL option, as I do not understand HTML in any way.

Any help would be much Apprieciated, Thank you….

@johndoe190Jun 15.2004 — I am a tad unsure of what you want do you want a link so that when clicked will bring up the zip file. If so....

<a href="file.zip" title="Zip File">Click here to view zip file</a>

The code above would be what you need.

And also geocities sucks my friend?

@johndoe190Jun 15.2004 — No problem mate just post back if you have any trouble just remember to change this part to your file name of the zip and the directory it is in.

<a href="file.zip" title="Zip File">Click here to view zip file</a>

@ray326Jun 15.2004 — Don't settle for geocities; there are much nicer freebies to be had.

@Razor1ukauthorJun 15.2004 — 1#Do I change both of the "file.zip" in the code you sent me, as so far I've only changed the second one - "zip file" (is that the directory?).

2#And the zip file is located in my File Manager under the same title, but seperate to the web page, so would I put the "File Manager" or "File_Manager" as the directory, or would changing the "zip file" to the name/position within the File Managersuffice?

3#Also have should I have put the "file.zip" as my zip file, and "zip file" as the directory being described in 2#?

P.S. What free sites could you recommend for being easier/better to use for future website I may set up?

Sorry for all these questions, Thank You All Very Much Again.

@johndoe190Jun 15.2004 — Just the one in red you change i dont really know how your directory is set up but say you had an images folder it would be like this.

<a href="images/file.zip" title="File Zip">Click here to get Zip File</a>

@Razor1ukauthorJun 15.2004 — Do you think you could logon to my geocities site at http://www.geocities.com/razor1uk2004/Map_Page , and see if your able to start downloading the zip (you may cancel the download once it starts to work, unless you wish to have my map to add to Battlefield Vietnam - if you have it that is) and let me know if it works. Sorry to disturb you at work, and I think I did ok in my exam too.

Thanks even more....

@johndoe190Jun 15.2004 — <a href="http://<a href="HeliForce.zip/HeliForce.zip" title="File Zip">Click here to get Zip File</a>">

Ive checked it out and it doesnt work as you have this code above.

<a href="HeliForce.zip" title="File Zip">Click here to get Zip File</a>

Try just that but the filepath still looks wrong maybe you could take a screen dump of your directory or just try rightclicking the zip file in the directory and go to properties and see if it gives you the path.

Glad to hear you done gd on the exams

@Razor1ukauthorJun 15.2004 — This is what it gave me http://www.geocities.com/razor1uk2004/HeliForce.zip

so that goes in the directory section of "???/Heliforce.zip" etc of your previous email HTML code yes?

@johndoe190Jun 15.2004 — Right this should work now mate.

<a href="http://www.geocities.com/razor1uk2004/HeliForce.zip"> title="Heliforce Map">Heliforce Map</a>

Right title="Heliforce Map" is just what shows you when you hover the mouse over the link and the text in between the tags for e.g. Heliforce Map is what you see on the page.

Hope this helps mate.

@johndoe190Jun 15.2004 — Opps i forgot to tell you that it wont bring up a download prompt box for ya if a a user wants to download it they will have to right click there mouse and save target as. If you want the download prompt box like used on many sites you will need a server side languange which geocities cannot provide for you.

Try freeola or sumthing they are free unlimited bandwidth and php,cgi etc only donwnfall you have dial into them to upload your files.
