beginner question

well this is my first post and will hopefully be one of many. i’m an an absolute novice and am currently working my way through all the primers and whatnot on this site and trying to learn as much as possible. i will be making a website for my band and have set up a simple free test page for me to practice on before i go buy our domain name and seek out a suitable host. my practice page is at: http://www.freewebs.com/metestsite/index.htm

as you can see there is currently nothing there (pretty much). all that is there is two lines of text. my question is this; how do i get that text to appear the way it is one this website: http://www.brandnewrock.com/news.php

the text is simply just copied and pasted for practice purposes. i want to lay out the news page on our website very simply and uncluttered like the one on the “brand new” website at the above link.
i simply copied and pasted what i thought looked like the relevant code from that website but although the text appears, the “box” it should appear in doesn’t.
i have a feeeling it has something to do with css and the source code of the site i copied it from has a css bit in it. any pointers as to what i should are much appreciated.
again, i apologize for being a complete novice but i really want to learn. hopefully when i get good at this i will be able to partake in all the discussion on this board but at the minute most of the topics are going over my head.
there should probably be a separate section on this forum for “beginner questions” but there isn’t so i hope this is in some way relevant to the “general” section.

@DaveSWJun 08.2004 — If I were you I'd go to www.w3schools.com and learn about html and css.

I could write the code for you but if you ever want to modify the site it's best to learn for yourself.

@Aronya1Jun 08.2004 — Welcome to the forums. Dave is right. If someone just gives you the code, it won't really be helping you much (give a man a fish...). Focus first on HTML & CSS. I'm also kind of fond of EchoEcho for tutorials.

You're on the right track about CSS being used on the site you linked, but there's more to it than just an additional CSS file. You may be putting the horse before the cart for the moment. Study up, experiment, ask questions here. You'll get the knack in due time.

One suggestion; don't wait to reserve your domain name. You never know who might steal it out from under you. Just because you reserve it, doesn't mean you have to use it. Do it now.

@staringelfauthorJun 09.2004 — thanks, you're probably right. i'm probably better off figuring it out for myself and learning from my mistakes. i'll check out the w3schools site.

oh, i can't actually reserve my domain yet because my band are in the proces of changing our name and so i can't register til we decide for definate on a new name.
