Announcing 6 Web.org, the web developer directory that promotes standards as laid down by the W3C.

Hi,

I have recently created this: http://www.6web.org

I would like to know everyone’s opinion on the website including where it should be improved, is it a good idea? And would you join?

@Robert_WellockFeb 06.2003 — I like the idea of having a site that lists websites that use XHTML and CSS and follow Web Accessibility principles ?.

Although I wouldn't join because I don't offer a 'commercial web design' service as such: http://www.xhtmlcoder.com/worthvalley/ (beta stage site) as you can see from that beta I consider myself similar to a Hacker - not to be confused with Cracker - who just codes for fun.

@CharlesFeb 06.2003 — I don't think that I'll be joining any organization that promotes web standards that they don't bother to follow. Take a look under the hood of that web site.

@Tim158authorFeb 06.2003 — Hmmm. . . I can't see anthing notably wrong. Can you give me an example of what's a miss?

Hey I'm not the best web designer there is, but I'm only 18 - that's got to count for something. ?

@Tim158authorFeb 06.2003 — That is certainly a very interesting farming website, if I've ever seen one.

PS you missed the "L" from xhtml in your hyperlink

Right off the bat we notice that they've used the TABLE element for layout, something that's forbidden in the HTML 4.01 Spec. (XHTML 1.0 is simply an XML application of HTML 4.01). It's also clear that the're not properly using HTML. Headings are not marked up as such. And the form controls are not associated with LABELS. Oh, and they haven't idetified the language of the document. I expect that there's more. You can check it yourself using the list at http://www.w3.org/TR/WCAG10/full-checklist.html.

@StefanFeb 06.2003 — Not to mention, why is the page done in Transitional?

If you are pushing webstandards, even XHTML/XML, but make no use of eg target or frames, using transitional is just sloppy coding. At least I couldn't see anything not achivable with a STRICT doctype in my quick glance.

@CharlesFeb 06.2003 — Well, they've use the depricated CENTER element and their FORM element immediately contains CDATA and inline elements. Perhaps it's well that they're using the "I really don't know what I'm doing" DTD.

Yepp, that's why I said sloppy coding. No reason to use trans DTD just for that.

@Compguy_PeteFeb 07.2003 — This is just a spam posting... trying to boost it's membership from 4 members to 6 :-)

At least it's the hope.

@Robert_WellockFeb 07.2003 — No, I didn't miss the L, one hit in the insert key by accident, but thanks anyway :p.

@Tim158authorFeb 07.2003 — This post isn't spam!

I can't remember why I used the center element - I think it was to do with the css align not working in some other browser.

If it makes you happy I'll convert all my pages to strict DTD over the next few days, then you can find a load of other problems I bet.

I don't want to push standards too hard because if I only show XHTML 2 strict designers, then the directory would be smaller than it is at the moment.

Anywho, watch this space because I will eventually make this website flawless no matter how long it takes.

@Tim158authorFeb 07.2003 — It did not take as long as I thought it would to totally re-create the home page but I've done it.

Please go and take another look:

http://www.6web.org

Is it a step in the right direction?

I only recreated the first page because I want to get it right before I duplicate the design throughout the website.

Thanks for all the comments by the way ?

@pyroFeb 07.2003 — Looks good, valid XHTML 1.0 Strict. Well done.

Definitly ?

Now fix those <p class="heading"> and other "funny stuff" and you have a pretty good base to stand on ?

BTW, you use

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=windows-1252" />

If we are to be really strict, you are only allowed to leave out the XML declaration if you use UTF-8 or 16, otherwise it must be included. However including it partially breaks IE 6 CSS support (it goes into quirksmode).

However since you are using english anyway, why not stick with utf-8 ?

@Tim158authorFeb 08.2003 — Okay so my first message was a bit of a plug, but at least I don't add a spam footer at the bottom of all my messages ? ?
