@oorjaclinicOct 28.2017 — #404 error is considered one of the most potential impediments in the way of successful SEO. When a specific URL is renamed or becomes non-existent, any links connecting to that URL would result in 404 errors.
@rootOct 28.2017 — #I see more SEO mythology turning up again...
A quote from a web page that was found using a search engine. Google’s official stance on 404 errors is straightforward and simple, explaining that they’re a normal part of the Internet but generally undesirable for SEO:
“404s are a perfectly normal part of the web… In fact, we actually prefer that, when you get rid of a page on your site, you make sure that it returns a proper 404 or 410 response code (rather than a “soft 404”?.”
When a link directs users to a page that returns a 404 error, Google recognizes that the page is no longer available and removes it from their search index. It also drops all of the PageRank from links pointing to the page, rendering the links worthless.[/quote]
The main issue with linking is that content gets removed, sites stop (get taken down) and other things happen in terms of network connectivity, which is why a 404 error is not an immediately bad thing, the site server may be down, the node may be down,
