Not sure how often this happens, but I recently was laid off due to “downsizing” (probably unnecessarily at least from what I was hearing), and then two other senior developers left due to some issue they had with decisions the company was making (I haven’t figured that all out yet), with one of them just wanting to quit the career and do something else due to “management and corporate bull****” that’s basically been managers pushing for unreasonable timelines and executives caring mostly about sales and maximizing profits over well-functioning products and worker sanity.
When I see good people being pushed out of good jobs and previously-trustworthy companies under new ownership and direction, even to the point of wanting to quit the industry, I really have to wonder if we’re really going in a good direction.
When I post about this kind of thing on various social sites (friend sites, work sites, political sites), the response is pretty much “just shut up about it and suck it up like the rest of us peons” instead of any real kind of anger or solemnitude about what seems like fairly poor choice workers have with jobs, wages, and benefits, and what amazing choice corporations and executives have with being able to hire and fire about anybody they want at the cheapest price they can get all around the world while treating the people building their products like toys and robots they can manipulate and squeeze for a tiny little bit of extra profit at the expense of livelihood…
I don’t know how easy is it to apply for or get or work a job in another country, but it sure is easy for American corporatists to find and hire and direct workers in other countries… and I don’t consider that imbalance to be fair especially when we have to pay taxes on unemployment benefits coming from a government that’s already subsidizing profitable corporations and allowing to undercut worker/consumer choice at the benefit of profitable corporations trying to extract every last penny out of the blood and tears of their workers and buyers just to make their bloated execs’ richer.
