Which CMS should we choose for a re-development of a charity website?

Hello,

I work for a charity in the UK and we’re looking to re-develop our website.

In particular, can anyone offer us some brief advice, please, about which CMS we should choose?

Thanks.

Grant.

@TrainFeb 07.2017 — Research until you find one that fits all of your requirements. DO NOT chose by looks alone.

Do you even need a CMS? Notepad and a FTP program maybe all you need.

@Grant_MillerauthorFeb 07.2017 — Hi Train,

Thanks for your reply.

Notepad and FTP is probably too advanced for our non-techie staff.

The big question for us is whether we should go for a proprietorial and custom-built CMS, or an open source CMS - such as WordPress, et al.

Most of the advice websites/blogs that I've read seem to advise to use an open source CMS.

@TrainFeb 07.2017 — If $$$ is a issue, open source is there.

Used Dreamweaver for a while, but got tired of ripping out unwanted garbage.

@NogDogFeb 07.2017 — I would look for a CMS that is designed from the ground up for the type of site you want to create. Wordpress if fine for blogs, as that's what it was originally designed for. When you start patching it with add-ons to turn it into an on-line store, you then have a bloated square peg being forced into a smaller round hole. In that case, something like Magento is probably more to the point and more likely to have been robustly tested for that designed purpose. www.opensourcecms.com has been around for awhile as a place you can look at many free options -- not sure if there are any better comparison sites or not, so a bit of googling might be in order.

@Grant_MillerauthorFeb 08.2017 — Thanks, we've started to look at the options available with open source CMS.

@Grant_MillerauthorFeb 08.2017 — Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

We have been thinking about using WordPress, as many other charities appear to use this CMS.

But we'll have a look at Magento.

And thanks for the link to the opensourcecms.com website - I didn't know about this website until I saw your reply.

Regards,

Grant.

@Endive_SoftwareFeb 15.2017 — hey.., here i want to suggest something if you are looking for Magento.As Magento 2.0 version is launched 2 years ago there is so many advantages over Magento 1.0.I Read a blog in that they really well describe the basic and important differences between older and new version of Magento- http://bit.ly/2lbHhnS

@MattCarsonFeb 15.2018 — I think WordPress is suitable for you to re-development your site. Because it's easy-to-use, and also it secured your site.

@rootFeb 18.2018 — More to the question, how many people need access to update the system...

A CMS which offers flexible but secure access for users in the charity to add content or moderate public interactions in the built in features like message boards and so on... Depends what you are looking for.

Make a list first and get a sense of the admin structure you want to have in place (in case those elements at some point may prove useful so don't dismiss them)

Then look at a few, as in install and configure and have a look at a few.

@NogDogFeb 19.2018 — I think the OP probably already made their decision, since this is a year-old thread. ?

@rootFeb 20.2018 — Yep, I din't see that, mind you the missing style sheet for this page is missing and makes it hard on the eyes to read it...
