Meta keywords are less important than they were in the past. It is better to focus on the content on your page and make sure your keywords appear in an appropriate manner within your content including the title, article itself and any other appropriate locations. They key is making sure it is appropriate and not forced. Having meta keywords shouldn't hurt, but limiting it to a few of the most appropriate words or phrases is wise. Simply dumping a ton of keywords in the meta tag will look 'spammy' and inappropriate. In appropriate stuff can hurt you.

@DIGITALDTSJan 13.2017 — Now meta keywords tag is less valued. You may ignore this tag. If you want to add keywords make sure the content is related to those keywords. Focus on title, description and body content.

@breitinterJan 18.2017 — You can add n no. of keywords in 'meta keyword', but now search engines are not giving that much value to it. So you can optimize your content, title and description part to rank well in SERPs.

@deepakrajputJan 27.2017 — you can add 4-5 keywords in Meta Keywords tag for other search engines rather than Google because it doesn't support Meta Keyword tags for site ranking.

Name those search engines.

If a search engines is using Meta Keywords, it's as a spam signal. For a fact that's how Bing uses it.

@shivanshis4Jan 28.2017 — Not much I would say. Try using 3-4 or maximum 5 meta-keywords on your page if you actually want to put time in them. But as search engines are not preferring them nowadays, so better focus on the content, meta-titles, meta-descriptions.

For doing this, instead of wasting too much on SEO Agencies, try Google's Keywords Planner and moz tools. Hire good writers who can provide you natural, unique and SEO optimized content (I hire from Contentmart, and my writer's helped me grow - undoubtedly.) Finally, length for meta-title will be 50-60 CHARACTERS while 140 CHARACTERS for meta-description. (making it bold because I first time wrote 140 word descriptions which makes me laugh till yet)

@HamsaFeb 04.2017 — Google is not giving much importance to Meta keywords now a days.Try to concentrate on the title tags, Meta description and the content of your website.This will help in improving your rankings.

@jedaisoulFeb 04.2017 — Just to clarify:

  • 1. Keywords are specific to the web page, so must be used on a page-by-page basis.

  • 2. It is not essential to use the meta tag "keywords". More weight is likely to be given to the meta description, title and H1 tag.

  • 3. The description, tile and H1 tag (and the page content) must be intelligible. I.e. Not just a list of keywords.

  • 4. Inappropriate use of keywords is likely to damage the sites rating.

    @loka456Feb 06.2017 — meta tags are really worthless tags as most of the search engines are not following it now becuase once it was abused by the spammers.

    *** moderator comment: only the keywords meta tag. The rest of the meta tags continue to be important ***

    @Eric_DebbyFeb 07.2017 — Meta Keywords are a specific type of meta tag that appear in the HTML code of a Web page and help tell search engines what the topic of the page is. Meta keywords are distinguished from regular keywords because they appear “behind the scenes,” in the source code of your page, rather than on the live, visible page itself.

    Meta keywords were devalued by Google because they were being abused by site owners and marketers. Developers would “stuff” the code full of high-volume keywords and phrases, so that low-quality pages would rank for those search terms, considerably diluting the accuracy and value of the search results.
