@Aronya1May 29.2004 — Godaddy is where I register everything now, but I don't know if I would host anything there. Not saying not to. Just shop around a little. You can get hosting for very little money.

@davidbrentMay 29.2004 — I also reccomend www.easily.co.uk

I have recentley acquired a few domain names from there. They are very efficent, the pricing is low so overall, good stuff!

Best Wishes,

David

@airJXMay 30.2004 — I use: www.pcextreme.nl which is great, but you'd have te learn Dutch and live in Holland to use it. :p Anyway here to make people jealous:

  • - 250MB

  • - F.U.P. bandwith (meaning: your site get's slightly slower if you use a lot of bandwidth)

  • - Perl & PHP4 supported

  • - 5 MySQL Databases

  • - Unlimited POP3 email adresses

  • - Unlimited email aliasses

  • - Unlimited autoresponders

  • - Unlimited mailinglists

  • - Unlimited FTP-accounts

  • - Webmail server

  • - Website statistics

  • - Free use of DNS server

  • - Daily backup of your site

  • And now the good news: $1,80 a month!!

    They also host domainnames at about $16 a year.

    Also they have great service; my site and domainname were fully up in less than 24 hours after signing up.

    ? ? ?

    @flabobauthorMay 30.2004 — Sounds like a great site Air.......but ,no..i dont speak dutch ?))

    @David_HarrisonMay 30.2004 — Not quite as good but not quite as much either, http://www.b-one.net/.

    Check that out 90p / month (or $1.45). You can pay in practically any currency, most I've seen require payment in US dollars.

    This should also have been posted in the Domain Names forum for two reasons, a) it belongs there and b) it makes me feel more important. ?

    @ajhendersonMay 30.2004 — ev1servers.net has very cheap domains, $7.03/yr, but I don't think that includes free forwarding.

    For a basic site, I'd recommend hosting with hoststock.com. I believe you can get 50 or 100 MB of space for around $3/yr.

    Out of interest you don't happen to work for bluehost do you?

    @siskoJun 08.2004 — Well, if you're just getting into HTML, I would suggest you hold off and use a free host. Reason being, domains, and hosting obviously cost money. Try it out, see if you like it, and when you are ready to commit yourself, THEN start paying.

    Free hosts obviously have their restrictions, but its free and a great chance to get your feet wet before diving in.

    geocities.com

    tripod.com

    angelfire.com

    are just a handful of free services that can get you started.

    Paying for hosting leads to infinitely more power, but has a cost.

    Godaddy.com has domain names available for $8 and a good management interface.

    Surpasshosting.com is powerful and excellent host that I use...its cheap too. Great service to boot! Replies within 24 hours, telephone, email, instant messaging, and a substantial knowledge base. (tell them I recommend you www.hakanai.net) ?

    Rules of thumb!

    Register your domain seperately from your hosting service! It will cost a bit more but its worth the trouble saved if something goes wrong. (It took me 3 months and 6 notorized documents to get my domain back). If the company says "free domain name!!" Ignore it, and go register your own at godaddy.

    Pay monthly. Again, it costs more, but you have the opportunity to back out without losing much money if something goes wrong. I've been screwed by this too.

    Stick with a host thats based in your country. If something goes wrong, its just so much easier to contact them.

    Pay for what you need, and no more! If site A has 5GB disk space, unlimited bandwidth, and costs $10/month, pass it up and go for the $8/month plan that has 500mb, and 5GB bandwidth. If you will never use it, might as well not pay for it.

    Uh yeah...that shoots up a few red flags. I would transfer your domain after 60 days (ICANN regulation, must be active for 60days before you can transfer) to goDaddy. You'll have to pay the $8 or whatever transfer fee, but you'll also get an extra year for your name.
