how come pregmatch passes ???

I have the following pregmatch condition in my if condition:
if (preg_match(“#^$listUri$#”, $uri)) {
// This condition passes
}
Let me lay out the values for both of the variables , so
$listUri is actually this/is/the/.+/story/of/.+
and
$uri is actually this/is/the/one/story/of/two
How come this pregmatch condition passes ?????

@NogDogNov 26.2016 — In a regular expression, ".+" means one or more of any character -- possibly not including newlines, depending on certain modifiers. ("." is any character, and "+" is the one-or-more repetition modifier.)
