Interlinking question – absolute vs relative

Does anyone know the impact of using relative versus absolute links/URL when doing interlinking on your site?

I’ve seen old data that says there is no difference between the two; however, I’ve seen a tools (from Google) that treats them differently, so know I’m wondering if there is a potential impact. Secondary question – do interlinking absolute links get treated as an internal or external link?

@webiletechnologJun 08.2016 — An absolute link defines a specific location of the web file or document including: the protocol to use to get the document, the server to get it from, the directory it is located in, and the name of the document itself. With a relative link, the search engine spiders and browsers already know where the current document is located. Thus, if you link to another document in the same directory, you will not need to write out the full URL. Only the file name is necessary.

Is there an impact (thinking SEO, link juice, etc.) in using absolute links instead of relative when staying in the same domain?
