Hi All,

I’ve visited many websites and see a lot of them have webrings. A webring isn’t something I know alot about except that they are basically a collection of links to form a little community with similar interests. I’m interested in becoming a webring master but I know very little about it and how to create an manage one. I really don’t want to join one either.

This link below doesn’t give much, I think basically that link is to assume you have the knowledge. Of cource, I don’t and want one.

http://dir.webring.com/h?create_ring.html

I don’t know the advantages and disadvantages of having one. I take all of the knowledge is required is HTML and nothing else. The ring that I would like would exist “Join Now”, “Random”, “Next”, and “Previous” links in a table.

Has anybody created a webring before? If so, please share and how you created one so then I make one.

@MstrBobMay 22.2004 — Well, if you wanted to, you could make your own, though there doesn't seem to be much need. Apparently, you need to Sign Up with them first, and then they allow you to customize the look of the navigation. But one wonders why you would want to be in charge of a webring and not put it on your own site?? But anyway, you will need at least two websites to start off a ring, me guesses. I once joined a web ring (had a website about online RPing) and simply joined up with this free web ring company, twas cool, though not very large.

Anywho, if you do do the web ring thing, I'd suggest placing the link at the bottom of your website, and NOT on every page like some people. But other than that (and some companies that insert adds) I don't really see any cons with it, as long as everyone in the rings has websites with similar topics.

@ecrossauthorMay 22.2004 — Are you saying that if I go there I cannot put it on my website? Yes, I agree. I think having a webring at the bottom of the main page of a website, or one page that you wish to have the webring on. I don't think putting it on every page would be good idea. Just one page is good enough.

Oh, no, of course you put it on your own site! Sorry, I misconstrued your last post and thought you did NOT want to put it on your website. But these things tend to be very easy to manage, and are generally a good idea.

@ecrossauthorMay 23.2004 — Thanks for clearing that. I was confused. I was hoping for more replies on this subject but I don't see any cons with it either. Have you created one? I take that you have. I have joined webrings in the past and it seemed easy. I'm afraid managing one is another story. When you sign up, I take all that you do is fill in a form and it is generated for you. Is that right, or do you have to make the webring yourself?

@MstrBobMay 23.2004 — The one I joined was simple, but I guess it really depends on what service you are using, if I could remember what I used to use, I would send it to you. I don't, however, imagine it should be very hard at all to create/manage one. These things tend to be rather simplified so that there is little confusion. Any more than that is hard to say, like I've said, it depends on the service.

@ecrossauthorMay 23.2004 — Thanks for your reply. If you or anyone else has something to add, I'd be more than happy to read your responses. I'm just gathering some info and thinking of creating one in the future. Right now, I'm just gathering some basic info.
