What makes HTML5 so popular and why has it become so popular over the past years?

Hi guys, I am doing a research question for university about what makes HTML5 so popular and why has it become popular, therefore just would like some opinions and feedback so I can collate some analysis to back up the reasoning for why I think it has become popular so any comments would be great ?

E. g. video and audio which required plugins earlier causing problems when a user didn't have them installed.

Another example: Support for drag & drop which required JS/jQuery plugins beforen.

@jedaisoulMar 02.2016 — HTML 5 is little improved over HTML 4.01. It is CSS 3 that is a major step forwards over CSS 2. So I'd suggest that you document the differences (in both) and how useful they are. It is the functional improvements that make the new versions attractive.

Each developer will naturally tend to have a favorite feature or two, but there is a lot to appreciate. The site http://diveintohtml5.info/ has a nice introduction to HTML 5, with historic information about how it was developed.
