little picture to left of URl…(confusing?)

Hey everyone!

You know when you look at a browser URL and you see that little picture to the left of it (in webdevelopers its a yellow thing with WD in it) how do you put one onto your site? and how big do you need the image to be, along with filetype?

thanks!

@MstrBobMay 11.2004 — I have yet to use a shortcut icon, but I've seen them around. Usually it's this tibit of HTML

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="images/favicon.ico" />

They all seem to be .ico, but I'm not sure they have to be. 16px X 16px the norm? Anyone know anything more, feel free to interject yourself.

@JonaMay 11.2004 — LOL. Interject... You sound like my cousin! :p (No offense.)

Actually you'll probably also want to include type="x-image/icon" in your LINK tag, and only use the /> instead of the > at the end if you're using an XHTML DTD. I'm pretty sure either .GIF or .ICO files can be used as icons. You might want to check out the icon-making program called, "Icon-Maker."

@MstrBobMay 11.2004 — Oh, yes, well, atually I got that from the php.net website. Well, listen to Jona, he's right (usually). Anywho, on a side note, this doesn't work in Internet Explorer, does it? All I ever get is the I.E. icon.

I believe that one of the security patches removed support for that from IE. Ironically, the butterfly icon at MSN shows up for other browsers, but not for patched IE.

IE only shows the favicon if it's saved in your favorites folder. otherwise it shows what it wants to show.

@JonaMay 11.2004 — I've had Web sites with favicons bookmarked, and they've never worked for me in IE; the only time I ever saw the favicon in IE was when I went back.

By the way, Neczy, another site is http://favicon.com/. ?
