SEO tricks… good or bad?

I’ve been reseaching search engine optimization, and seeing websites that try to trick spiders by putting extra keywords and descriptions in various places, such as commented out text or multiple titles. Any opinions on whether this works, or thoughts on penalization due to multiple uses of the same word?

@Aronya1May 08.2004 — I guess this answers whether or not it works: google search

It depends on what your search terms are, though.

@burozoptionMay 20.2004 — It may work, but if someone were to report him, would he get kicked off google?

If I was bella web designs competitor you can bet money I will have looked at their source code and if I knew I could get him kicked off, I would definitely report him.

@mattoMay 22.2004 — Hi All,

i'm pretty sure google's parsing algorithm would pick up text comments and rank their importance appropriately (i.e. not at all). It would be far too easy use this as a method to artificially increase page importance/rankings.

Just my two pence!

@burozoptionMay 22.2004 — I would think that too, but when I searched on google the description that google gave me, (the one with the search terms bold and the surrounding text) that was from the comments on the page
