Beginners guide to subtmitting to search engines.

Can someone recommend a ‘beginners guide to subtmitting to search engines’?

Searching on search engines gives back a millions different results.

AND… can someone tell me what these search engine submission companies do that’s different and how can they justify their costs?

Thanks.

Jam

@Aronya1May 03.2004 — IMHO:

Manually submit your site to Yahoo, Google, DMOZ. Everyone else will pick you up from there.

Search engine submission companies will submit your site to everybody & his brother's search engines. Not necessary, and possibly not wise - it could work against your rankings in the big boys' indexes. If you accept that statement as true, then those companies can't justify their costs if they charge more than $25.

Re: a 'beginners guide to subtmitting to search engines'. Just put together a short (roughly 20-25 words) description of your site, and use that to submit. There will be simple instructions on each index's site to guide you thru the process.

@mattoMay 22.2004 — Hi Jammer

i paid £200 for express inclusion in Yahoo and submitted to Google manually - most search engines have picked me up - beware of dmoz tho, while it's definately a must to submit it can take a little while depending on the category you choose. It's important to read the submission guidelines as some editors run a tight ship - 'if you don't care about the quality of your submission then why should they' is the moto.

Best of luck

Matto

Side note: KHOJ.COM is a search engine for India. I just don't think most people are going to be using it. Nor is it likely to be a prime source of new listings for the major search engines.
