Scrolling the browser window

Hi.

I have used to separate methods to scroll a long page to the left and right, but neither of the methods exactly fit what I am trying to do…do any of you javascript experts know where I am going wrong?

Method 1: http://www.design4design.com/reds/new/
Method 2: http://www.design4design.com/reds/new/index2.htm

The final outcome will hopefully be a long “chapter” displayed on on page. When a button is clicked the screen will glide towards the left or right to locate the selected section of the page.

In method 1, the glide works fine. Please click the “How To Enter” link and it will glide. The problem is, it seems impossible to get the page to scroll left.

In method 2, it will go left or right fine but jumps straight to it…is there a way to set it to glide?

Would much appreciate any help/advice.

Thanks
