question on using "this"

I was wondering if there is a way to use ‘this’ to reference an image instead of ‘getElementById’. So I dont have to give every image an id?

this is what i have…
function swapThumb(id, source){
document.getElementById(id).src=source;
}
this is what i would like to work
function swapThumb(source){
document.this.src=source;
}
?

@David_HarrisonApr 14.2004 — Use "this" like this:

<i>
</i>
function swapThumb(el,source){
el.src=source;
}

onmouseover="swapThumb(this,'newimg.gif');return true;"
