Can anybody help me?

Hi,
I’ve just paid a fortune to have a webdesigner go through my pages. After he’d finished a lot of my links weren’t working any more and there were so many mistakes which amazed me. He wouldn’t check it through though, because he told me that the money that I had paid wasn’t sufficient to check through his work? ? . I KNow 470 Euros doesn’t sound a lot, but it was to me because my site is a none profit site.
Anyway, I sorted out the main problems myself and now want to know whether I can leave the rest or whether I need to have the following things corrected:
I put a couple of my pages in a Html tester and I got a 5
.If I can suss out what is wrong then I can sort the problem out, but I can’t understand the mistakes? Would anybody be willing to tell me what they mean?
Then I have another question. A lot of my pages are in two languages English and German. How do I make this clear for the search machines?
Thanks a lot,
Sarahlouise

[B]Hi,

I've just paid a fortune to have a webdesigner go through my pages. After he'd finished a lot of my links weren't working any more and there were so many mistakes which amazed me. He wouldn't check it through though, because he told me that the money that I had paid wasn't sufficient to check through his work? ?

It sounds like you are dealing with an unserious developer.

I wouldn't have payed the person in the first place, but since you appearantly have you are in a much worse position.

I don't know the ruled and laws in Germany (?) for customer complaint, but you might want to look into it and see if you can get some or all your money back.

I put a couple of my pages in a Html tester and I got a 5
?

What tester?

What does 5 mean?

Try http://validator.w3.org

Then I have another question. A lot of my pages are in two languages English and German. How do I make this clear for the search machines?
Usually it's done with the lang attribute.

http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/struct/dirlang.html#adef-lang

You can find the lang code for your language here

@SarahlouiseauthorJan 30.2003 — Hi Dave and Stefan,

It was equivalent to about 450 USD. I paid him 20 Dollars an hour for his work. I asked him to sort out as many mistakes as he could and to make the page better for a search machine.

After getting the website back again I found a lot of link mistakes - they weren't working any more. In some places he'd added a backlash too many and..... The scrollbar that I had for my navbar disappeared (for a smaller screen) . At first he apologised and told me that there was no way he could have corrected his work as well as doing the corrections ? :mad: . I found this quite strange, but was so daft and paid him more to sort the problems out :rolleyes: .

In the end I just gave up and after complaining I never heard from him again.

Even if he had only corrected one of my main pages it would have been enough for me to have carried on. I would just have copied and learned from there.

However, I put a few of my main pages in "Bobby" and in another German Html checking base and they both told me that my major pages had major mistakes and I didn't understand what they meant. I marked the mistakes red and have only put on a bit of the page so as not to fill the board. I thought if you could tell me how to correct the mistakes there, I could go from there? ?

@Stefan - a 5 is one of the worst marks you can get ?

Thanks a lot,

Sarahlouise

"Fehler" is German for "mistake"

There seem to be two major mistakes that repeat each other all the way through the page.

Thanks ever such a lot,

It saddens me that you have paid someone for this.

@SarahlouiseauthorJan 31.2003 — Hi Meow,

It does work and I repaired everything that wasn't working myself. The webdesigner was supposed to repair my html mistakes on my pages. Tha main pages were the most important. However, every single page is different and I can't follow them, because I don't know which one of them is right, so I thought if at least one of them is right - from thr HTnl point of view, then I can work from there, because my son and I will be able to suss it out then.

The pages all work in a browser, there is no problem there. I just want the Html to be right, because every time I write a new page on my website I follow the wrong HTml? ? .

The strange thing is that there are listings on all of my main index pages and they've all been changed differently? .

Sometimes with td, tr's and ol and sometimes with tr, td and li's. So I thought, I would try and do it properly.

The other thing that I'm not too sure about is how to put into the meta tags that the page is in two languages ? At the moment it just says that they are in German which isn't really true.

I trusted this webdesigner and paid him straight away for all his corrections, but everyday I found a new link mistake. However that's all working now. I was just shocked that the HTMl that was supposed to have been looked at was so full of mistakes?

Thanks,

Nicky

@meowJan 31.2003 — OK, here is what you get for free. ?

I haven't touched the meta tags and scrollbar code (please don't use that!).

It's down to one simple table and maybe it's a peculiar mix of old style and CSS but I don't know what browsers you need to support and what you understand so I tried to keep it simple.

I didn't bother to mimic spacing between items since I assumed that was more a result of the coding than per design. Hopefully you can change it to what you want.

Take it here and see if you get anything out of it.

You get a lesson too. Elements typically consist of <start tag>content</end tag>. Mixing tags randomly is very bad karma. :p

@SarahlouiseauthorJan 31.2003 — Hi Meow,

Thanks ever such a lot for your kind an"free" help - I'm sure it will help me sort my website out much more than the expensive help that I got?

I shall sit down this afternoon with my son and he will explain everything to me, although I do seem to have understood everything that you have put in. It certainly looks nice and tidy

@meowJan 31.2003 — Good. ;-)

It's far from the most elegant way to do it but it isn't too bad either. As you may understand I wanted to at least take text formatting from HTML to CSS without making it too hard to grasp. Glad it wasn't. :p

WDG has very good references for HTML4 and CSS1 that's a bit easier to understand than the specs themselves. You can download them in Windows help format if you want. They are extremely when one needs to look something up.

If you want each link, or groups of links, to have a different color you give the link(s) a class in the html like so:

< href="" class="classname">

Then you use that class to define a CSS rule.

In the example the selectors (look it up ? ) is in a comma separated list because you wanted the same color for all states of the link and this is a way to group selectors. If you don't want that you have to write one rule for each state:

a.classname:link {}

a.classname:visited {}

and so on. Exactly as with the 'basic links' above in the code, only with the class names added.
×

Success!
