Google still tweaking

I’m sure there are those who would argue that Google (and every other search engine) has always been constantly tweaking their site ranking methods, but if so, any changes were minor and hard to spot. Search results stayed pretty much the same for a given keyword/phrase for a long time. Since “Florida” that seems to have changed. Case in point:

After the big shakeup (shakedown?), my very first client’s site disappeared almost completely from Google’s results. They had been ranking pretty well for 2 or 3 different keywords and phrases. They panicked. We re-optimized & re-submitted the site. They showed up again. Then, they disappeared, but my site appeared near the top of the rankings. My site is a web services site. Nothing at all to do with my client’s industry. No keywords in common, not optimized, and not even submitted to the SEs. I do have a couple of links to the client’s site, but that’s it.

I was about to post this info to another thread as an example of how optimizing for Google is still totally up for grabs, when I decided to check one more time. Now, my site is nowhere to be seen, as it should be in this case. But, guess who’s site is at the top of the list? My client. **pats self on back** ?

Go figure.

I didn’t post this to brag, since I don’t expect that site to stay at the top. Only to point out that Google hasn’t finished playing with their algorithms or whatever. Just food for thought, I guess.

@Compguy_PeteApr 04.2004 — I hope your sites stay at the top however I have a feeling they will be tweeking the ranking algorithm a couple more times before they go public.

@Aronya1authorApr 05.2004 — I'm afraid I share your opinion re: my client's site staying at the top, although, to be honest, the page listed has every right to be there. Only time will tell, I guess.
