edit php ini file

Hi guys,

my company currently is using an unmanaged dedicated server and i wish to edit the php.ini and httdp.conf file by myself… how can i do that ??

actually i able to ssh to the server… but i just dunno how to edit the file i found.. is it i need to download the file and upload it back after edited by using ssh ??? if that is the way, how could i download it then ?? is there any shell command i can use to download or upload the file to server ??

because when i use ftp programme, i just cant get to the directory i wanna go.. or can i edit the file directly from the ssh programme ?? i am using putty,,

please advise.

It sounds like your server's FTP server is configured not to allow you to access those parts of the filesystem so...

First off, to do this you'll need root access - if you have that then great, if not, you're unlikely to be onto a winner as you won't have the necessaary permissions

So if that's sorted you could either learn a command line editor like vi, though this is not the simplest editor you'll ever come across.

A nice solution might be [URL=http://www.siliconcircus.com/penguinet/]Penguinet[/URL] - it has a nice graphical SCP client, it basically looks and feels and works like FTP but it runs over your SSH connection rather than FTP. So that may help ? You would be able to - exactly as you say - download it, edit it locally and re-upload it

p.s. remember to back up any files before you edit them. seriously!
