Email Discussion List software

I am looking for email discussion list software that is basically a plug in type of set up…that even a newbie can install and manage. It will sit on our server so we have no hosting requirements. Any ideas?

@Compguy_PeteJan 29.2003 — Do you want to do email marketing or a ListServ where it's like a forum yet not as effective?

@tadaaauthorJan 29.2003 — Thanks. I'm not interested in marketing...only an email discussion list like ListServ. I don't understand the not as effective comment. Are you saying that email lists are less effective than forums? Why would that be so?

Thanks again

@Compguy_PeteJan 29.2003 — It's not because back a number of years ago, ListServ's were very popular! However with the evolution of forum software it's a much more effective medium for you to support. Your able to get people to come and stay at your site longer.

Also people can read past posts easily and jump in at any time. Without having a mailbox full of messages from the service.

I tried to join a ListServ recently and I was not with the list long since I was to busy to follow the topics and enjoy what was going on.

It's only my Point of View that it's more of a hassle for end users.

Consider running a board of this size with a ListServ... It wouldn't work.

If you were only going to have a small list of users for Interal company or family use, the ListServ might be the best option for you.

@tadaaauthorJan 29.2003 — You might be right....an on-line forum may be the way to go for us. I want to make a master list and then create a few sub-lists made up of the specific users in the master list...and I already plan to have the sub-groups in their own password protected pages...which would give them the privacy they seek from each other.

So, if I do go with an on-line forum, what software would you recommend? I was looking at AForum...do you know that one? Any others easy enough for newbies?

Thanks!

@GadeTerbobFeb 10.2003 — I've managed both listserve and a forum. I MUCH prefer the forum. Both from user and manager points of view. Stay away from XMB, they have several security issues that I don't think they've solved yet.

This forum is vBulletin. Probably the best "paid" forum. IMHO. If cost is important, look at free Invision Board, but phpbbs is worth considering, too.
