Annoying Developers.

I was just contracted by a company to doa bunch of updates on their Content Management System.

One of the jobs was to remove smileys from the forum software. The file is about 6,000 lines long and there is no comments! And the indentation is terrible.

Why do stupid developers have to write source so that no one else can ever read their code? Its so annoying… Now i am going to have to scan every line so i can tell what the hell the original developer was trying to do.

Has enyone else ever had this problem?

Regards,
Andrew Buntine.

@PeOfEoMar 28.2004 — Yes... I hate myself. When I do something then do not come back to it for 6 months and find that I did not leave comments I want to kill myself lol. I just forget what the crap I was thinking 6 months ago and have to reread it all.

Job security. ?

@ray326Mar 29.2004 — I do a couple of things in that situation. First I run the source through a "beautifier" that makes it look like *I* want it do then I use an editor that understands the language and at least does syntax highlighting for me. I've never seen one for anything but C but a "call tree" generator is also a great help. Next down the list would be a decent xref generator.

@buntineauthorMar 29.2004 — Oh yes.. I always insist on using a syntax-highlighting application when writing/editing source code.

I ended up finishing the job -- Lucky. I will have to charge more.:p

Job security.

This is far beyond job security.. The original author would have had just as much 'fun' trying to understand the code as i did.
