URLs changing magically????

Why, when I type in, for example, www.bjfogg.info, I get the web site I want…

…but up in the URL field, the “http://” suddenly reverts to a different URL?

Magically, it is now “http://www.bjfogg.com/

What cause this? I think I printed out the Home Page, then when I went to type in a new URL to go somewhere else, it had changed as I indicated above.

Also, I printed out the Home Page of
www.goodyeardealers.com/boston/

But at the bottom of print out, it reads
www.goodyeardealers.com/home.asp

…and if I click on that URL, I do not go to the Boston dealer.

These are mysterious aspects, my brothers and sisters.

Please help me understand these issues.

Thanks a lot. ?

@buntineMar 24.2004 — Traditionally, you are supposed to specify the protocol you are using to connect. In the webs case, its HTTP..

Modern browsers do not require this as they can automatically fill it in for you.

So, its just a feature of the browser your using.

Regards.

...but I'm not sure you understood my puzzlement, or maybe I don't understand your answer, or maybe the universe is goofy.

What I meant is why does the dot info change to dot com?

Why does the dot com slash boston slash

printout as dot com slash home dot asp?

that's what is weird.

@NedalsMar 24.2004 — This is most likely a server redirect.

The owner of 'bjfrogg.com' may also own the names 'bjfrogg.info', 'bjfrogg.net', etc and all are re-directed to 'bjfrogg.com'.

@buntineMar 24.2004 — True. He/She may have set up site mirrors.

@bizabilityauthorMar 24.2004 — "Site Mirrors"???

Now you got my attention.

As a writer I want to know all the Internet and web terms.

This is new to me. Cool one. From context I think I know what it is. I could go to NetLingo.com to look it up.

NOT "bjFROGG" not a FROG, come on guys, this is serious. I'm writing an article, finishing the final revision for publication, and I need to know what URL to cite in article.

Okay...my turn to be funnY:

Go now to: www.warholfoundation.org

for funny Andy photos with fist hitting him in photo booth.

Andy Warhol was one of my friends and heros. How I miss him. I weep when I see this photo collection on this site home page.

B. J. Fogg is an ally of mine, and he conducted the classic study on Evaluating Web Credibility at Stanford.

www.consumerwebwatch.org provides study article.

All designer already probably know this, if not, please check it out for visual appearance being primary criteria of users for web credibility.

@buntineMar 24.2004 — Hmm.. I would like to help you out here, and although, the term 'Site Mirrors' was tossed around alot in the office last year -- im no expert on the topic.

The designers seemed to know all about it but i was a back-end developer and didnt have to worry about signing up and configuring hotsing accounts.

I will get in contact with one of my old employees and ask him about them.

From my understanding, it allows you to dynamically redirect a page without altering the URL. So i would be at www.whatever.com but i would receiving pages from www.someothersite.com/docs/whatever/. Among other, similar things.

About Andy, have you heard 'The Dandy Warhols'? An Aussie band whos name was inspired by the man himself. He liked them too! Supposedly.

Regards,

Andrew Buntine.

Sorry about that. :o

It was a genuine mistake!. I quickly read the post and started typing.

Edit:

I don't believe this involves 'site mirrors'. It is simply a re-direct. 'Site mirrors' are typically used for users to download popular software from different locations around the country.

I think in both cases they have meta refresh tags on the initial target pages that cause the browser to request the resulting page. It is not being done from the server side because there are no redirect headers in any of the responses.

Yes and as you can see below the Frogg coder even screwed up the tag syntax.
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN">

<html>
<head>
<meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html;charset=iso-8859-1">
<meta http-equiv="refresh" content="1; URL=http://www.bjfogg.com;">
</head>
</html>
@bizabilityauthorMar 24.2004 — Andrew Buntine:

Cool name you got there. Thanks for wasting so much time reading my ridiculous posts.

Yes, the Dandy Warhols, I had two videos by them from 120 minutes, one was "Not If You Were the Last Junkie on Earth."

I also liked Brian Jonestown Massacre, one CD anyhow.

For fun: look at www.petemissing.com for very odd animated effect on his Home Page. He is leader of NYC classic 80s noise band Missing Foundation.

Anyone know what the heck those balls are?

Mr. Buntine: as soon as I get that article done and some more hot work done, will gaze at yr home page for free usability advice.

@buntineMar 25.2004 — Thanks buddy, that would be good. Also, thanks for the positive comments.

Those balls are just animated GIF images. He has just tiled his background.

Regards.
