Help! Windows7 shows html pages as text documents.

Hello,
My new computer shows my .html pages as .txt files. I cannot see them as web pages like I did on my old windows xp. What do I need to do to fix this problem. So far I have had to use an ftp to change the pages to .shtml so they will show up as web pages.
Does someone know what happened here on my new computer?
Sure would appreciate some help. I hope this is the place to ask this question.
Mary

@marysffasauthorApr 21.2015 — Hi Coothead,

Thanks very much. ?

I am using Notepad.

@jedaisoulApr 21.2015 — I think it may simply be the default file association that is causing the problem. To see if that is the case:

1. Right click on an html file and select "Open with".

2. Select "Choose default".

3. Select a browser (IE, Chrome, etc...).

4. Click on OK.

@auntniniApr 21.2015 — As a MAC person, hope I'm not missing the point about Window7.

But when I tutor in beginning HTML, I always have to help students save and/or access the Notepad files -- pointing out that Notepad defaults to .TXT extension and they have to change it to .HTML or .HTM when saving and have to view "all files" to access the HTML files.

Could that be the simple error?

@jedaisoulApr 22.2015 — Yes that is an alternative, but in that case I would have expected the OP to have said "saves html files as text" rather than "shows html files as text". Hence I assumed it was the file association that might be the problem. However I could be reading the OP too literally! ?

Oh, and if you are right they also need to deselect "hide file extensions for known file types" in control panel -> folder options -> view.

@auntniniApr 27.2015 — jedasoul, thanks. That drives me crazy -- not being able to see file-type extensions on PC Windows.

I used to be able to fix that, but couldn't find it on new PCs in open lab at school.

@DeveloperDaveMay 03.2015 — I have HTML files and primarily associated with Chrome (i.e. the "Open" action) while the "Edit" action is associated with Notepad++. That way I can always edit HTML files and preview them in a browser with just a couple of clicks

@felicellenaMay 03.2015 — Greetings coothead,

I am writing to you as a response to another's post, since couldn't find the link to send a message to you directly. Please review my dilemma:

I secured a domain name and hosting provider, but am unable to upload my web pages, whic were designed using Illustrator CS5). They are in .ai format and the .html version won't upload due to the incomplete '4 KB' size. How do I convert the files from ".ai " to enable me to upload my web pages?

Thank you in advance for your time.
