Cd burner help……

i just bought a new samsung cd burner. i installed it, i hooked it up how it showed, got power to it the IDE cable in but it shows i need JUMPER plugs? i called the costomer service they say i need them, i talk to a few people they say i dont. the thing did not come with a driver Cd the guy aid when you start your computer it should pop up as new hardware but it hasnt. what to do, best buy want 50$ to install it and i want to do it myself i just paid 100$ for it. i dont know what else to do?

@modifier_guyauthorMar 21.2004 — #nah it did not work, it said i can manualy instal but it was not listed and i dont have a drivers CD for it, they say it dont need one. what can i do? i just paid 100 and sum $ for it. could the IDE not be hooked up right, also it came with a new IDE would it hurt to replace my old one? i have 2 drives a DVD that came with it, then i put in the burner and hooked the burner to the old IDE cable. what can be wrong?

@buntineMar 21.2004 — #The drivers will be available on the Internet. Have you tryed searching for them?

The IDE cabel could be installed incorrectly, though, traditionally, if this the case--your system would not recognise the hardware at all or your PC would explode due to the incorrect measure of volts being passed to the CD ROM.

@modifier_guyauthorMar 21.2004 — #samsung the company i called and he said that the CD burner did not have drivers CD's or any thing, that when i installed it , then new hardware wizard would notice it, then he said that i needed jumper plugs then he wasnt to clear about it.

@buntineMar 21.2004 — #Take out the component and then reinstall it. If the 'new hardware found' wizard doesnt appear after that, call the supplier and yell at them.

@Aronya1Mar 21.2004 — #If Windows doesn't see it when you boot up, drivers won't help. They don't cause the OS to see new hardware. Try to get your BIOS to recognize it. If it isn't seen at that level, you have a hardware problem.

Jumpers should be available at any computer store for pennies, although they should have come with the drive if they are needed. Are you clear on what you're looking for?

@modifier_guyauthorMar 21.2004 — #funny thing is, it has instructions on how to instal it but they are so confusing, writen in about 8 languages and so mixed up, but i got them figured out enuf to instal it. i beilve it is in right it is hooked up as it showed except for the jumpers it shows what they are but it did not come with them and the instructions barely said ne thing abotu them.

i ave heard alot about BIOS or whatever What are they.....??? i went ot the system settings during boot up, and it showed nothing for my new CD drive just my dvd. how do i turn bios on or what ever it is. f istill cant figure it out, i am yellin at samsung for making a crappy BUTT product

@modifier_guyauthorMar 22.2004 — #ok i got into BIOS, and it showed the IDE slave as none so the guy on the phone from samsung said change type to CD rom, so i did then exit and let it boot, then go to my computer but it wasnt listed, and he said somethign about BIOS updates or something then hung up, i asked about the crappy instructions he said there for ppl who know what they are doing and i was like well that ****, how are new people who want to do it them selves supposed to do it and i was yelling about that. but anyways it still aint showing up, i think i am gonna take it back and get my money back!! peice of CRAP

@Aronya1Mar 22.2004 — #BIOS [b]is[/b] your system setup. If your drive is not detected there, my guess is it doesn't work. Even if the jumpers are set improperly, it should be detected.

You never answered my question from before. Do you know what you're looking for when they talk about jumpers?

You could try disconnecting your existing drive & connecting the new one to the same location on that ribbon cable. If there's still nothing, the drive is bad.

i am just gonna take it back, the guy on the phone was rude and the service has been bad, i dont want a product like this were the service is crap. i will take my money else were.

@PeOfEoMar 22.2004 — #Im telling you, you do not need jumpers, without them it will go to cable select. If bios sees it and it is set as ide2 or ide secondary slave or master you are set. Make sure it did not come with any firmwear or anything, if so install it.

@PeOfEoMar 22.2004 — #:rolleyes: This is why we have plug and play bios! If it is plugged in to the ide, and the drive works, ods are bios will see it... jumper or no jumper.

@hinshowsMar 23.2004 — #Yo dude you need to put the "jumpers" on either Cable Select Or Master (if you dont have a drive already on the second IDE channel) or Slave (if you have a drive set as "Master" on IDE2" If you need more help, PM me.

Infact you do not on an hd either... well some brands require you to have it on there but it is generally in cable select when you take it out of the packageing which is the default. If your drive did not come with a jumper then you do not need it, default is cable select it will be the slave if it is plugged into the slave slot on that ide cable (the second slot).

At this point, my money says the drive doesn't work.

MY COMPUTER IS 7 YEARS OLD, ON WINDOWS 98, AND 192MB OF RAM AND SUPER OLD AND SLOW

also when i go into BIOS to turn it to cd rom it will show cd rom then, i will go back into bios but it will then be set at empty, i saved and all cus i get a pop up saying to save it, and i hit yes.

Did Samsung ask about the specs of your computer? Or did they do the same thing we have, and just assume a relatively current hardware config? I'm wondering now if you are trying to mix incompatible technologies.

the funny story, the Cd drive had a jumper, it was in the master slot, it just needed to be moved, i did that, went into BIOS changed it, then it was working! burnt a cd on 32x in 6 mins, it is rated at 52, but i only have 48x cds and at the high speeds they tend to skip so i wrote on 32x

yo man. i got a good tower, and burner, we were thinking of upgradeing the motherboard, ram, video and sound cards for it, just some simple cheap things. i wanna start with a new mother board

@PeOfEoMar 24.2004 — #when you get a new mother board you also need a new processor, new ram, and probably a new case depending on when it was made. You will also need a new power supply. Everything needs to be atx compliant as far as case mobo and psu go. Then the proccessor and the ram have to be compdable with the motherboard. I was thinking along the lines of

I chose amd because it is cheaper then intel, you could get a cheaper amd proccessor then that but that is a very good processor and a few bucks more would be justified. I am loyal to msi I think they make good boards so that is why I reccomended one of theirs. I chose geil ram because I have been very satisfied with their ram and that is a very good stick and it is cheaper then competator equivalents.
