Can’t find my homepage file

I’m not a developer but I didn’t know where else I could find out this information, so I hope it is OK if I post here. We have a small business and don’t currently have a Web person; the developer who did our site doesn’t do that anymore. I have been updating the site for a long time and it’s been fine, but now I have run into a problem. I need to make a change on the homepage, and there are parts of the page that I can’t change using my shopping cart software. I’ve always used the cart software to make homepage changes in the past because most of the page lives there, but a part of the page does not (the header and some links under the header). I was under the impression that index.php was the file where homepage text resides, but that isn’t the file that has all of my homepage’s info. I have spent hours looking at every file that is on my server, and I have not found the one that contains all my homepage info. I’ve searched using Windows’ search function for phrases that are on the page (I have copies of all my server files on my own computer), but that hasn’t brought up the right file either. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I might proceed?

@ginerjmJan 23.2015 — Is this a stand alone web site or does it use some CMS to manage it?

When you edit the index file do you see terms like 'include' or 'require' indicating that other files are being pulled into this one to complete it?

@rootJan 23.2015 — Sounds like a CMS

Your home page might be a template, some CMS systems use a plain text file with the .tpl file extension, some use a partial HTML file with tags that get swapped for page data and that file may be index.html and in a folder called templates.

The template file may be a theme in the themes file, again it depends on how your site was built.

What I suggest is that you contact the person who was doing the site for you and ask them if they installed a CMS like Joomla, simpleCMS, razor, etc., or used a libray class (building tool) like Smarty and if he has used any kind of software, you need the admin login details.

Alternatively, you could take down your site and rebuild from scratch with a CMS that you are comfortable with.

Can you PM me your site URL, it might help identify if its bespoke build, CMS or other.

@ChelseaGirl98authorJan 23.2015 — I do see "include" and I've checked those files too, but nothing yet. My CMS is my shopping cart software, Cartkeeper.

@ChelseaGirl98authorJan 23.2015 — Thanks, I will PM you my URL. The person who did my site probably wouldn't remember anything, it was quite a few years ago....I know he didn't use Joomla, just our Cartkeeper shopping cart software...

@ChelseaGirl98authorJan 23.2015 — I don't see how to PM someone....

@rootJan 23.2015 — Click on the users name, up comes a menu, select the option to PM someone, if you don't see the ability to send, you might not have made enough subject posts like this one.

@rootJan 24.2015 — After a bit of sniffing around the index page rendering, searching the internet, it is my opinion that your site is run entirely by the cartkeeper software.

So I would ask the guy who set it up to give you the Admin login details, if they say they can't remember then thats easily dealt with as they only have to go through password recovery and they then get the ability to reset a new password and send you the new password and the email account associated with the password.

If they give you some lame excuse then IMHO you should contact cart keeper to ask for assistance with taking ownership from the admin. If they say that they can't help, ask for a refund.

Another question, do you have the control panel admin login for the web host you use?

If you don't then get it off the chap who uploaded the cartkeeper and agin, any lameness, don't hesitate to get the hosting provider to help you.

If this guy is being a complete tool, get the better business bureau involved.

Then name and shame the guy.

Simples.

Good Luck.
