Finding the position of the cursor within some text

I need a function like selStart in VB. I have a template which is loaded into a TextArea and I have a button which inserts certain fields into this template. This is fine if they are writing the template from start to finsish but if they load one up from file and insert a field it always inserts it at the end of the text. What I need to get is the postion of the cursor within the text so i can insert the field at the correct place. Any ideas?
