Database and Programming Questions

Well, I’ve been searching around, but it’s hard to find a helpful answer to my questions on Databases, so I figured I’d come to ask you knowledgeable folks. Basically I’m working on a website which involves sections for these different organizations. Each organization has it’s own events calendar going on, which of course needs to be updated. This is, however, rather labor intensive on my part, so I searched for a better way. Follow so far? I hope you do.

Well, I read on this website talking about databases and how they can be used to create calendars which others can update with a simple web form. “Brilliant!” I said to myself, I often talk to myself. And as it turns out, their web server plan included a database. So I said to myself “I’ll set up this calendar thing and all will be well.” Now to the troubling part, I have no clue how to do this, and the sooner I can get it done, the much better. I value my spare time and simply can’t stand to wait for me to learn a new language, though I have no qualms of doing just that.

So I hear I need to use ASP. But, I don’t think my server supports asp. I tried it, but no dice. So how else can I use my database? What language? Or, is there any saintly soul that would give little old me the necessary coding to display and update database info? I’ll must likely fiddle with it later on, but I have no idea of what to do, what to learn, or even time to learn it yet. So, anybody feeling helpful today?

@TinaFMar 15.2004 — I hope I am understanding your question/situation correctly.

You don't need to use ASP for creating an online calendar that can be changed/updated with a simple web form.

There are already pre-written programs in the various languages that do this. All you have to do is install them on the server.

If you are on a UNIX server, you can use a PHP and MySQL calendar program.

I've used 2 different ones and I like both. One is PHPEventCalendar by http://www.ikemcg.com/

and the other is BosDates by http://www.bosdev.com/

If I had to pick between the 2, it would be BosDates... but you should decide depending on your needs and budget. I found both of these through HotScripts.com

Hope this helps!

@The_CheatMar 16.2004 — the first thing you should figure out are what serversider scripting languages are available to you and what database.

then either learn them and make them yourself in that language, or find a pre-written script for that language.

some great places for free scripts in various languages are:

http://www.hotscripts.com/

http://php.resourceindex.com/

@buntineMar 16.2004 — I developed a commercial events calendar application for a web development company late last year. You can see the original here:

http://www.buntinedesign.com.au/calendar/calendar.asp

It has an in-depth back-end admin system, which you can view if you like. Just ask me and i will PM you the username and password.

Tell me if that is what you want.

Regards,

Andrew Buntine.
