Link Button State to EXCEL Spreadsheet

I would like to have several buttons on an HTML page that each have states of On or Off. I would like the initial state of each button to display according to data in either an MS Access data base table or Excel spreadsheet. When the button is displayed, it would be On if the database says On or equivalent.. The state of the button can be changed with a click, changing the visible state on the HTML page and the changed status sent back to the data base to change the record status in the Access .mdb file or the Excel.Xls file. Assume that JavaScript can handle the details…Any ideas?
