Hi guys,

Just a quick question here for some of you smart smart people.

What extra coding/languages does creating an e-commerce site actually involve. Apart from the usual HTML and CSS.

I am looking into another way of expending and thought I would ask.

This might also help future readers of this post.

If there are any blog links, site links that can best explain your summary then please feel free to post.

Kind Regards

@ARookieDesignerauthorSep 03.2014 — I read on another forum that a gentleman applying for a job creating and maintaining e-commerce sites should meet the following criteria:

To be proficient in:

HTML (hand-coded)

CSS

PHP

Javascript

MySQL

Preferred skills:

PEARL

Linux

Is this correct?

@KesharLimbuJan 28.2015 — You would need

HTML - For template

javascript, vbscript, etc - for client-side programming

php, perl, etc - for server-side programming

database server - to store information

photoshop, freehand - for designing pictures.

You could also use Java Applet, Java Beans and Java Servelet for client-side and server-side programming.

However nowadays you can also find so CMS Softwares such as Wordpress, Drupal, Magneto, etc with gui interface. All the programming stuffs are already taken care of. You only need to use the e-commerce GUI and the plug-ins written by other programmers, do some drag and drops and type some informations and post to make the site.

@KesharLimbuJan 28.2015 — Also you can use Flash with actionscript to design the template and write client-side programming.

@jedaisoulJan 28.2015 — If, as it seems, your objective is to build a shop, not to become a web developer, forget the languages. You need to use a CMS. But which one? That is the question you need to focus on...

@NickiCatAug 26.2015 — you will need : PHP, HTML, javascript ,CSS and MYSQL

as for platform for your site it's better to choose Magento, at least I prefere magento.

there are a lot of companies working on magento , have a look at this company for example this one, they specialize on magento. If you don't like magento another good option is Wordpress.

@kmoinuAug 26.2015 — It should also be clarified what kind of shop you're talking about.

If you want a website with just a few items that someone can buy, you can just paypal (or other payment cart system) buttons. You would need to understand how to build & maintain websites for this: html, css, photoshop or something similar, basic php, maybe some javascript & more complicated php.

However, if you want to maintain an inventory and don't want to learn how to do database stuff on your own, a CMS is the way to go. You'll still need some html and css knowledge to make the site your own, unlesss you buy or find a free template that does everything you want. Many of them (Wordpress, Magento, Joomla, Drupal, Presta, etc etc etc -- the list is ridiculously long) will do what you want. They each have strengths and weaknesses -- do some research and try out different ones and figure out what works for you. Beware of fanboys of a certain CMS that have only used that one or maybe tried one other CMS and therefore think it is the best.

@bobbeyAug 27.2015 — If you are a big E-commerce, my advice for you is using Magento - a very popular platform now. But this platform is quite difficult to customize. Or you a small E-commerce, you can think about Woo-commerce. A platform on Wordpress, easy to use and customize.

For Magento you can go to this site to download theme and extension: Free Magento download

For Woo-commerce you can go to wordpress store to buy any plugin and theme that you want

Success!
