Isn't every page a potential "landing page"?
Really. You don't have control over what a potential user searches for. You don't have control over what Google (et al) spits out for that search. So [B]index.php[/B] and [B]about.php[/B] are both "landing pages" depending on the search term and the algorithm du jour. Doesn't it make a lot more sense to "optimize" every page for the [B][I]user[/I][/B]? ([B][I]User[/I][/B]? What's a "user"?)

There's a reason Matt Cutts told us "write for the USER, not the engine" -- which is why 99.99% of what people call SEO is 'hoodoo-voodoo' that WILL get you slapped down sooner or later once Google catches on to the latest flavor of manure.
Writing to the user, wouldn't that mean accessibility and graceful degradation? Nah, that would be crazy, too easy and far less work. Can't possibly have that.

page load time should be low.
you content should be of high quality and easy to understand.
site navigation should be easy for the visitor.
the page shouldn't have the popup ads or something like that because it makes a visitor frustrated maximum time.
and many more thing that your landing page should have.
all these things will reduce your bounce rate and as low as your bounce rate makes your page more useful to visitors in google's eye.. ?
