@deathshadowJul 03.2014 — It depends on what you mean by "SEO" -- Worrying about search engines is a small but important part of building a website, and should be driven by using HTML properly, content of value, and organic backlinks.

Unfortunately, that's NOT what most people mean when they start throwing the term "SEO" around. They mean a bunch of scam artist bull that has nothing to do with building an actually successful website. There is NO legitimate reason for there to be people who "specialize" in nothing but SEO, much less entire companies based around it -- said entire "industry" is chock full of lies... To the point you'd be better off buying Pirelli's miracle elixir; That's what did the trick, sir, true, sir, true. Was it quick, sir? Did it in a tick, sir? Just like an elixir ought to do!

They use card stacking statistics, "magic perfect matches", and jingo-istic market-speak to scam people who just don't know the first thing about what a website should be; sinking their fist into the client's wallet and running for the hills. MOST so called SEO "experts" don't know enough about HTML, accessibility, professional writing, or even search engines to be opening their yaps on the subject of site-building OR content-building! But, they talk a good game to people who don't recognize the manufactured results, card stacking, and other outright lies.

I often wonder if much like cultists, they've deluded themselves into believing their own bull... sometimes it's like they've got the same "cognitive dissonance" found amongst doomsday cultists after a predicted end of the world doesn't happen.

The algorithm changes you mentioned like Penguin and Panda ONLY impacted people trying to game the system -- be it from being a sleazeball scam artist themselves, or by taking the advice of sleazeball scam artists -- and to be frank THEY GOT WHAT'S COMING TO THEM!

These engine changes and the penalization of abusive sites is NOT a bad thing, if anything we need more of it because SEO as a 'cottage industry' with people who do nothing but dupe the ignorant into believing the fairy-tale BS needs to be stamped out -- since generally speaking it has all the legitimacy of your typical late night TV infomercial 'get rich quick in Real Estate' scams.

MIND YOU, a lot of people have gotten rich selling said scams; but that's following in the footsteps of Kevin Trudeau. I'll be shocked if we didn't see some of the SEO crowd landing in jail sometime over the next few years given what total snake oil doctors most of them are.

Then again, maybe not so shocked -- since I'm looking out at the direction of the entire web development industry with disgust to the point of nausea.
