UK website legal requirements article

I’ve written and researched an article about the legal requirements for websites under the Disability Discrimination Act. Hopefully it might clear up some of the confusion surrounding the DDA, although until a case goes to court and a precedence is set it will always be a ‘grey area’.

Check it out at: UK website legal requirements

@DaveSWMar 08.2004 — So your conclusion is that the WCAG will be used for the basis of any court ruling?

@trentonauthorMar 08.2004 — Yes and no. From everything I've read I think that they will draw heavily from the WCAG. I think they'll also take into consideration the EU recommendations (which is basically priority 2 of the WCAG), RNIB recommendations (who are actually recommending the use of tables for layout!?) and the Sydney Olympics committee case - the only time when someone was successfully sued over their website.

Anyone else have any thoughts?

@DaveSWMar 08.2004 — Strictly speaking they don't recommend it:

Only use tables if CSS layout is impractical

If your organisation uses v4 browsers then tables can be better from a selling perspective. A trick I've seen is putting a small cell above the left menu column to ensure the right column is placed first if read linearly.

@Robert_WellockMar 09.2004 — Trenton you are getting around a lot of different forums this week.

In eithercase it is about time the RNIB sorted out their website, or it will be me that will being taking action against them.

@trentonauthorMar 09.2004 — I'm with you, Robert, their website sucks!
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@Robert_WellockMar 09.2004 — I've tried telling them before but they failed to take notice, I could write a complaint that the RNIB website discriminates against me.

Though I've got better things to do than slate a website and W3C Member that doesn't practice what it preaches in it's own "See it Right" campaign.

Though they don't set a good example for webdesigners.

I also prompted a one-page accessibility article in this months UK PCW Magazine http://www.pcw.co.uk/ 'Hands On' section it is available within the UK in all good newsagents.
